Bowmans Island Trail Guide Duluth, Georgia

Bowman’s Island was one of the lesser-known Chattahoochee National Recreation Area hikes, at least in my book. I had not heard of it prior to researching all the parks. This one is located in Cumming and is on the West side of the Chattahoochee River, accessed near Buford Dam.

Part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

The Chattahoochee National Recreation Area is located along 48 miles of the Chattahoochee River across 15 separate units in metro Atlanta. This area has 66 miles of hiking trails and offers diverse views of riverfront hiking across the city and the surrounding suburbs.

Trail Options at Bowmans Island

One of the best things about Bowmans Island is that you can really customize your hike depending on how much time you have.

  • West Side Loop: A 4.5-mile loop (or up to ~5.9 miles depending on your route choices) that explores much of the west side of the island
  • Northern Loop: A shorter 2.5-mile hike near Lower Pool West Park
  • Southern Loop: A quick 1.25-mile option if you’re looking for something easy and low-commitment

If you’re in the mood for something longer, you can connect to the nearby Laurel Ridge Trail, creating a hike of about 8.3 miles with ~656 feet of elevation gain.

What to Expect on the Trail

This hike winds through a peaceful hardwood forest that sits just above the river, giving you a mix of shade, river views, and a few surprisingly dramatic features along the way. I thought it was really unique that I could drive along Lake Lanier and peer down and see the Chattahoochee River and this trail below.

You’ll come across rocky outcroppings, including some formations that rise to about 50 feet, which add a bit of visual interest you might not expect from a riverside trail.

Like many trails within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, it’s well-maintained and easy to follow, making it a great option for both casual hikers and those looking to log some miles. I particularly enjoyed this trail because the path is well-maintained and there is a ton of shade, so it is a good hike for humans and dogs alike during warmer months. During springtime, this hike is also perfumed by honeysuckle. If you miss the honeysuckle, you might catch wild berries growing during the summertime.

Important Tips Before You Go

A couple of things to know before heading out:

  • Water Release Warning: Because the trail is located near Buford Dam, you may hear a siren indicating water releases. These releases can cause the river level to rise quickly, so always stay aware and avoid getting too close to the water’s edge.
  • Dog Policy: Dogs are allowed on leash on most trails, which is always a plus. However, they are not permitted in the Lower Pool/dam area managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. If you’re hiking with your dog, plan to use the first parking lot on the right after entering the park to stay within dog-friendly areas. The signs are pretty well marked to denote where dogs are not allowed.

Amenities at Bowmans Island

This park is more than just hiking trails. It’s a great all-around outdoor spot.

  • Boat ramp for canoeing and kayaking
  • Popular fishing area (especially for trout)
  • Picnic areas for a post-hike lunch
  • Restrooms are available near the main access points
  • Horseback riding is allowed, which is a unique feature you don’t see at every Atlanta-area trail

Wildlife & Scenery

Keep an eye out while you’re hiking. You may spot a variety of bird species along the river, as well as deer and even foxes if you’re lucky. I was fortunate to see some deer on my last hike here.

Happy Hiking!
