Brasstown Bald: The Best Winter Hike in Georgia
Hiawassee, Georgia
One of my favorite winter hikes in Georgia, especially in January after snowfall, is Brasstown Bald. The snow-covered landscape creates a magical experience, but be sure to check road conditions in advance. Inclement weather can close the park gates, and icy conditions make the hike more challenging—trust me, I’ve had my fair share of slips!

Getting to Brasstown Bald
To reach Georgia’s highest peak, set your GPS to 2941 Hwy. 180 Spur, Hiawassee, Georgia. The drive is scenic but features winding mountain roads, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, taking Dramamine is a good idea. Once you arrive, there’s a $2 parking fee, and a shuttle service is available for those who prefer not to hike.

The Hike & Breathtaking Views
At an elevation of 4,784 feet above sea level, Brasstown Bald’s observation deck sits above the clouds, offering stunning 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see four different states, and if it’s cloudy, you’ll be surrounded by a dreamy, misty mountain landscape.
To reach the summit, hike the half-mile Summit Trail, which is short but steep. If you’re not up for the incline, the shuttle service can take you directly to the top. Beyond the summit trail, several other hiking trails in the area provide additional opportunities for adventure. The visitor center and gift shop also make for a nice stop before heading back.
