Hiking Atlanta’s Bamboo Forest
If you’re looking for one of the most unique hikes in metro Atlanta, the East Palisades Indian Trail delivers. While many visitors come just for the famous bamboo forest, this scenic trail offers so much more, from peaceful creeks to historic ruins and stunning views of the Chattahoochee River. During springtime, it is extra special with unique flora in bloom.

East Palisades: Indian Trail vs. Whitewater
The East Palisades area is divided into two main sections:
- Indian Trail – best known for its iconic bamboo forest and wooded hiking trails
- Whitewater – popular for its sandy dog beach along the river
While Whitewater is great for a quick riverside hangout, Indian Trail is the better choice if you’re looking for a full hiking experience.

What to Expect on the Indian Trail
The Indian Trail hike is far more than just the bamboo forest. It’s a diverse and rewarding trail that showcases the natural beauty of the Chattahoochee River area.
Along the hike, you’ll experience:
- Long Island Creek – a small tributary that runs alongside portions of the trail
- Charlie’s Trapping Creek – where you’ll cross a charming wooden bridge
- Cabin Creek area – home to intriguing stone ruins, believed to be remnants of an old mill
These ruins are similar to what you’ll find at other popular Chattahoochee hikes, like:

The Bamboo Forest
The bamboo forest is easily one of the most photographed spots in Atlanta.
- Towering bamboo creates a peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere
- A distinctive crooked tree sits at the center, making it a favorite photo spot
- It’s especially popular in spring and summer, so expect crowds

Short Hike to the Bamboo Forest
If you’re short on time and just want to see the bamboo forest, follow this route:
E13 → E21 → E22 → E23 → E17 → E16 → E26 (Bamboo Forest)
This is the most efficient way to reach the highlight without doing the full loop.

Aside from the bamboo forest. There are also beautiful views of the Chattahoochee River, which, during spring or summer months, you will find crowded with kayakers and people floating in tubes. There is also an observation platform on this hike, which has an elevated view of the river, which I highly recommend.
Happy Hiking!
