Park Headquarters and History at Island Ford
Island Ford happens to be the location of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Parks Headquarters. This vistor center is housed in the historic Hewlett Lodge. The former home of Georgia Superior Court Justice Samuel Hewlett was built in the 1930’s.

Hiking Island Ford
Island Ford is home to 5.3 miles of hiking trails. These trails weave alongside the Chattahoochee River and then also through a young hardwood forest. Throughout this hike, you will encounter some small streams and bridges as you weave more inland. This is a great hike to take if you want to spot wildlife. There are often a variety of birds, deer, and turtles that call this park home.

History behind Island Ford’s Prehistoric Rock Shelters
One of the highlights of Island Ford is coming across these rocky outcroppings or rock cave-like formations. There are 16 of these throughout the park. They were once used as seasonal dwellings ot stopover points by Native American Tribes in the region. They can be found closest to the river’s edge. This area became a key travel route for settlers and traders moving throughout the state during the 19th century.

Other Offerings at Island Ford
